Top budget-friendly motherboards suitable for an AMD Athlon 64 X2.
Hey, I had an Athlon 64 X2 a while back. One day the power supply wouldn’t turn on, even though everything was powered up, and there was no image on any GPU. I found a capacitor in my room that I regret losing. Now I’m planning to upgrade to a new motherboard for a Windows XP or 7 PC from 2000–2007. I’m aiming to spend no more than 20€, and I already have the RAM for the old board—just let me know if you need more info.
These boards are now almost worthless. If your country offers e-waste recycling, you might find a lot of am2+ boards there. You could look for models based on 700 chipsets like the ma790fx or k9a2. Higher-end units tend to be preferred because they support higher FSBs for better OCs, which is the main appeal of these older systems. However, low-end boards usually stick to single GPUs and lack expansion options. If you want dual or quad GPUs, those are definitely possible. On the other hand, low-end boards often have limited I/O and expansion slots. For running dual GPUs, you’re definitely set. Mid-range boards usually have more interesting specs and better expansion, though they might not handle the latest overclocking as well. If you’re into DDR2 or FSB tuning, ASUS boards are a good choice. For top performance, the Giga EP45 boards work best, especially with ASUS models. Overall, this is more about hardware tinkering for enthusiasts who enjoy digging into the details of their systems. Post-DDR2 or FSB adjustments via PLD are rarely exciting for low-end builds since you can’t really modify the hardware much.
I don’t know, the closest e-waste place I’ve heard of collects everything in big bins, so I’m not sure I’ll find anything useful there. I’m planning to run at least two GPUs with it eventually, but right now the CPU bottleneck is a problem—my GPU is slow compared to it. I’m still looking for one that the CPU doesn’t completely outpace. If you know any high-end GPUs that work well with that kind of CPU, let me know.
I’m not entirely convinced by this claim. I tested an 8800gts with my core 2 duo e6750 and i7 920, and the i7 performed significantly better than the CPU would have expected. The 8800 series was a major leap forward, offering speeds that far surpassed earlier chips and putting AMD in a tough spot until Ryzen came along. In such a setup, the bottleneck would be the CPU, not the GPU. That said, a CPU bottleneck isn’t necessarily bad—especially on an older system where the GPU might be outdated. I’d rather have a powerful GPU running alongside a slower CPU.
I managed to get a PNY GeForce 8800 GTX, but it really slows down even the strongest X2 by about 40%.
This means your system is struggling because the GPU isn't keeping up with what the CPU needs. You're trying to calculate something called a bottleneck, and it looks like your GPU is the limiting factor. Since you don't have a specific board info, it's hard to pinpoint the exact issue.
Yes, you can use a board with an N750 chipset. The product link you shared is for that specific model. Regarding the optical audio output, it’s possible to add one if needed, though it’s not a standard feature.
Maybe I'll attempt that. Or I could write a post explaining how to repair my motherboard, because it seems like just one cap might be missing. (I don't know the exact values.)
The 8800gts offers more performance than what an Athlon x2 can handle. Your graphics card won’t receive data quickly enough from the CPU to achieve its full potential frame rate. Any calculator used here is inaccurate. Still, it doesn’t matter. Each system has limitations; if they didn’t, games would run infinitely fast. However, I prefer having extra GPU power in an older setup like this. Just ensure your power supply is sufficient, as the 8800s consume a fair amount of energy. I once exceeded my 500 watt PSU with my Core 2 Duo E6750 and 8800gts 640 MB RAM.
We're discussing a 64 X2 or just an X2? Got it, that's why I asked. Thanks ^^
