Hey there! I just put in an i7-10700k with a 120mm AIO and have been tweaking it for overclocking. It’s currently running at 4.98ghz. When I ran it through tools like prime95 and cinnebench, it would instantly lower its speed to around 3.5-3.75ghz even when not heavily loaded. Normally, the CPU temps in hwinfo stay near 80°C, with a peak of about 93°C on core 3—just 7°C below its max temperature. Is this behavior typical? If it’s happening, can I adjust it via BIOS? Or if not, how should I figure out what’s causing the issue? Thanks for your help, stats!
CPUs typically slow down around 90°C, occasionally dropping into the mid-80s. Have you confirmed the thermal paste was taken off? Is the AIO properly aligned? Also, is using a 120mm cooler for a 10700k overclock really wise? I’m pretty sure even the stock setup gets warm. EDIT: It’s normal; upgrade to a better cooler—either an air cooler or a larger AIO.
Check the chipset using hwinfo and look for any limiting features. For cooling, a 120mm AIO might not provide sufficient heat dissipation for this CPU model.

Prime95 or Cinebench demand significant CPU power. A modest 120mm AIO won't suffice for an i7-10700K boosted to around 5.0 GHz due to limited heat dissipation. The temperature will rise quickly, causing the single core to hit ~90°C while others stay in the 80s.
It's the throttling issue, likely due to having a too-small AIO. I've already updated my comment. You'll probably need a better cooler—120mm won't cut it for a 10600k with overclocking, and it's not even good for stock setups.
Oh wow... I thought it was the ASUS Z490 Prime A model. The Z490 Prime V could have issues too—its VRM and cooling aren't doing very well.
I was around 80°C. The ad says a 10700k will begin throttling at 95-100°C.
