Threadripper and Ryzen 9 performance details
AMD’s Ryzen 9 uses the AM4 socket and employs two memory channels. Using fewer channels might affect R9 performance. The R9 is designed as a budget-friendly high-end processor, making workstation builds more affordable for those who need it without breaking the bank. Threadrippers are costly but less expensive than Intel’s HEDT chips.
It targets workstation users with limited budgets, though HEDT refers to a specific product category. Originally, the budget HEDT line included the 8 and 12 core Threadripper CPUs, but they performed poorly and didn’t gain much market traction. The 5950X model truly stands out—strong, capable, and ideal for semi-professional users on a tighter budget.
I considered the 3900 Series option, but the overheating issues from my previous Pentium D setup were a concern. I’d prefer a TDP around 65W instead.
Upon closer inspection, I noticed the R9 CPUs have 12 and 16 cores. I wondered why manufacturers are shifting toward a 3.5 GHz processor. Then I read more carefully... Oops, should say the first time. Is this an OEM item? https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16819113662...6819113662
