I enjoy working with Blender and often face long render times. A Threadripper 3970x would make rendering much faster! The issue is that I also like playing games. Since Threadrippers aren’t great at single-thread performance, they struggle in games. Has Zen2 improved this? Probably not by making the game loop multithreaded, but maybe it could compete with other CPUs like the 3950x? Could it reach around a 3950x speed for gaming? Of course, I still want to play games.

Yes, in most games it performs at least as well as the 3950x version.

The TR 3970X essentially matches the R9 3950X but offers more processing units. Compared to earlier Threadripper models, it stands out as the top choice for gaming performance due to its impressive binning, cache, and overall setup. You can confidently play games on it without any issues.

It's designed for demanding tasks such as 3D rendering, intensive video editing, and running complex software. For gaming, enable all CPU-intensive settings and expect smooth performance from your Threadripper. Unless you've already purchased it, budget around $2000 to buy one.

It looks like my finances are getting a bit tricky. Maybe later in the year? I need to build up some savings.

I didn’t intend to reference anyone, sorry. The third generation TR chips perform well for gaming, as explained in the replies above. I’m using a first-generation 1950X, and even with a Titan X Pascal it fits my needs just fine. I prefer casual play, not high FPS setups, so I stick to 4K at 60Hz. Sure thing! A 3x120AIO should handle it, but make sure the cooling is adequate for that high power.

Zen 2 certainly improved the situation. For just a few threads, these will maintain compatibility with AM4 CPUs, ensuring you enjoy a solid gaming experience. Features like NUMA present in older Threadrippers are no longer an issue. You won't need to compromise on lower thread performance for better higher thread performance now.

You're asking for clarification on the 3x120 specification and suggesting a cooling solution. The recommendation points to Thermaltake's Water 3.0 Ultimate as a suitable option.

I've tested 1440p at 144Hz. I also like 4K at 60Hz.
