I purchased Windows 7 OEM for my initial PC build, and since then Microsoft has provided free upgrades. They allowed me to keep activating it during any reinstall. Today I'm on version 11 with the same key. I also use Linux and have been gradually spending more time there due to my job.

Technically speaking, I’m relying on my OEM license from my old Windows 7 HP. After upgrading to Windows 8—among the 20 who did—I had my license changed to retail. Now it works on both my next and previous computers, including this Windows 11 machine.
