I chose to move up from my i7-4790k and look for a more modern option. It has been reliable for seven years, but now it’s time to part ways. I’ve been researching upgrades and what’s best next. I currently have a 1080ti with 16GB of RAM. I’m planning to switch to the 3080 lineup soon after it drops. My setup uses 1600GB of RAM. This morning I placed an order at MicroCenter and will collect it tomorrow afternoon. I’m opting for the Ryzen 9 3900XT, an ASUS X570 TUF Gaming Plus motherboard, and a G.Skill Trident Z Neo Series RGB with 32GB DDR4-3600 memory. I’ll keep my 1080ti but worry about making the right choice. I’m unsure if anyone has ever upgraded from the i7-4790k to the 3900XT and can share their thoughts. I’m open to suggestions—other Intel or AMD options would be great too. I don’t want to regret switching to AMD and missing out on this upgrade. Thanks for any advice!

You're just using the machine for gaming, right? That's fine, but if your main goal is to run tasks that take advantage of multiple cores, it might be worth considering otherwise.

From a gaming standpoint, the 3900xt is a subpar choice. It often falls short in comparison to more affordable alternatives like the 3800/3800xt. It wasn't created with gaming performance in mind. I'd also suggest holding off on the upgrade for a while longer. The Ryzen 4000 lineup is quite close, and we're likely to see some meaningful enhancements soon—just speculation at this stage.

I'm not sure about your needs, but my PC would work well with a B550 board and a Ryzen 7 3700X for gaming. For a budget build, 32GB of DDR4 and 12 cores might be too much, though I don't know your priorities. A 16GB DDR4 at 3200 or 3600 is enough if that's what you require.

I mainly play games on this setup and occasionally make some gameplay clips, though not often. I was considering the 9900k or 3900X, but thought the 3900XT would put me ahead and reduce concerns for a long time.

3600mhz cl16 fits well with Ryzen and could be a good choice at this cost.

It's a reasonable purchase, though I tend to prioritize saving money. If I were you, the 3200 model would be sufficient.

It's worth noting that 3900XT performs well in gaming, though it might be a bit excessive right now. I understand your perspective and won't dismiss your thoughts. I'm still figuring out the best processor for me at the moment.

You’d choose the Intel 10900K and RTX 3080, while you’re planning for an RTX 3070 and 10700K.

10900K costs $699, which feels a bit steep right now, though 10700K seemed reasonable. I think I’d prefer going for more than what’s needed but not overspending.
