Starcraft 2 offers a lot of free content, and you'll still need the Battle.net launcher to play Warcraft. Age of Empires 2 remains a timeless title. Creeper World is a quirky indie gem that reminds me of old flash games. Over 95% on Steam. It works on basic hardware. I enjoyed Halo Wars on console, though I'm unsure about its port.
