The intended purpose of the system is clear. If it's a gaming setup, choosing an i3 6100 or i5 6500 would be appropriate. The cost difference is typically small, and many people overlook that these Intel processors don't require a costly motherboard. Additionally, the Corsair VS series is considered among the worst they produce, so it's best to steer clear of it. A system equipped with an i3 or i5 and a GTX 1060 or RX480 will work well with a decent 450w power supply.

What will the system be used for? If it's a gaming rig, go with an i3 6100 or i5 6500. The price gap is usually small, and you probably don't need an expensive motherboard. The Corsair VS series is the worst they make, so I recommend avoiding it. A system with an i3 or i5 and a GTX 1060 or RX480 will work well with a decent 450w power unit.

I’ll mainly use it for gaming. But does the i5 6500 really lose to the FX8350 in benchmarks?

Thanks for the PSU suggestions.

Playing a gaming i5 6500 will easily beat an 8350, even the i3 6100 can't match it in many titles. The 8350 shines mainly on synthetic tests that make full use of its eight cores, and it also performs well with fast file opening and closing. Most games rely on four or fewer cores, and Intel generally offers better single-threaded speed.

In gaming an i5 6500 will easily beat an 8350, even the i3 6100 can't match it in many titles. The 8350 shines more on synthetic tests that make full use of its eight cores, and it also handles file opening and closing quickly. Most games run with four cores or fewer, and Intel generally performs better in single-threaded tasks.

The Intel cooler works well in most configurations. Consider what you need from a case—basic options like the Corsair 100r and NZXT source 220 are solid. For something with more style, check out the NZXT s340, Corsair 230t, Corsair Spec Alpha, Phanteks P400, and Phanteks Enthoo pro.

The Intel cooler works well for most configurations. You're interested in case features—basic options like the Corsair 100r and NZXT source 220 are solid choices. For something with more style, consider the NZXT s340, Corsair 230t, Corsair Spec Alpha, Phanteks P400, or Phanteks Enthoo pro. I think the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M would suit you. The NZXT H440 is also an option, though it's a bit pricier. You mentioned a 6600k CPU in tray form—what cooler would fit best? I'm curious about the Kraken x61, but I'm not sure if it's worth the investment.

The X61 serves well as a cooler for overclocking. If you're not aiming for overclocking or prefer a different option, consider a Cryorig H7 or H5 CPU cooler.

Consider a better mobile processor. The ASUS sabertooth FX chips really crush mobos. An i5 will easily beat them in games. Switching from the FX-8320 (OC 4.2) to the 6600K wiped out AMD. If you're budgeting $200 for cooling, it makes more sense to invest that in an i7-6700K on air.

you need a better mobile processor... consider the ASUS sabertooth. Those FX chips really damage mobos. The i5 will easily beat them in games. I switched from an FX-8320 (OC 4.2) to a 6600K and it crushed the AMD.
if you're budgeting around $200 for cooling, you could use that difference to buy an i7-6700K on air instead.
i plan to go with the 6600k, but I can't afford the i7 6700k due to Finnish taxes...
