Hey everyone. I have a 1600x with a 1080ti and was thinking about whether to upgrade everything now or wait for the next CPU refresh rumored for early 2022. I’m not ready for performance drops until late 2022. Right now, most games aren’t running smoothly at 1440p with solid FPS under 60. Apex is struggling between 80-100-45 and isn’t stable.

A 5950x setup is not worth it right now, a 5600x is near the limit if you're focused only on gaming FPS.

Also checks if your motherboard supports the components you plan to use. It’s also important to think about what software you need. Will your existing board handle Windows 11? Which applications interest you? I’d skip a full-core upgrade right now. Maybe a small AM4 CPU upgrade could help in the meantime. A 3600 clock speed sounds good for games, but I’m making general guesses about the rest of your setup. Edited October 3, 2021 by Bombastinator

The initial version of Ryzen performed quite slowly right away. A massive improvement is expected in any 5000 series model.

The PSU selection shouldn’t influence frame rate, but a 10-year-old PSU gives me some concern. I think you might have been lucky with a 10-year-old unit. Ten years ago, a typical PSU was seen as reliable for about five years, yet 1200W is far beyond what most people use. It seems you might have managed to get away with it then. I think drawing that much power could cause problems if you actually try. I’m not very familiar with PSUs, just checked the tierlist. Edited October 4, 2021 by Bombastinator

Many 300-series boards support Ryzen 2. A 3700X should meet your requirements. It’s not overly expensive at the moment and isn’t a top-tier CPU for that motherboard, though it may not be your absolute best choice. You could recoup some money by reselling it after upgrading. The main concern is whether you need an immediate upgrade or if you want to wait for the next generation. Choosing between 3700X and AM4/5950 has a lot of uncertainty since some parts are still out. I previously inquired about the PSU four years ago, and many appreciated it and believed it would last a decade. Now I feel it's time for a shift.

So you think waiting for newer one would be better for ddr5 and new socket. I feel betrayed by amd knowing my board doesn't work with socket they would support until 2020. But at the same time I won't go back to Intel. Will waiting until next one see that much improvement. I feel 16 core last a long time and work for anyone's needs. But if you think going mid for now and changing psu and CPU would work.
