The PC screen remains inactive while lights and peripherals activate (VGA light appears on the motherboard)
Hi there, a few days back my computer would power on normally, open up to Windows and run for a short time before the screen and sound suddenly stopped. The case fans and lights stayed active, but there was no display and the CPU indicator on the motherboard was lit. After some troubleshooting I managed to fix the CPU light issue, but now the screens won’t turn on at all when the PC is running and the VGA light is active.
Details:
AMD CPU
MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max motherboard
AMD GPU
What I’ve tried:
- Ran PC without the GPU
- Cleared CMOS by removing the battery
- Used a 1 RAM stick
- Unplugged everything and checked connectors
- Switched CMOS battery
- Tested with different monitors and cables
- Updated BIOS (didn’t work, flashlight flashed twice then stayed red)
- Used a different PSU cable
It happened after a power surge (though the PC was plugged into a surge protector) and after moving the PC to a new house.
What is the model and age of the PSU? I think the power supply might be the problem.
it’s a gamemax bp-500-rgb, roughly six years old with more than 10,000 hours of use, though when connected and powered on the GPU shows a small light above the connector to the PSU suggesting it’s receiving power.
It makes sense, I remember getting the pc on a tight budget when I was 14, so it’s not unusual. Would you like some suggestions for more affordable PSUs? Also, should I consider replacing the PSU just to confirm before purchasing a new one? Your friend’s experience might be helpful.
You might want to test by exchanging it with your friend's PSU for a quick check. Be sure to replace all the internal cables, not just the box. If I had to do it, I’d go ahead and purchase a new PSU and install it because I’d be replacing the whole unit regardless of the cause.
Choosing a replacement PSU hinges on your budget:
