The Intel i7 8700K chip cannot be overclocked beyond 4.7GHz.
Hey, I'm facing an issue where, despite adjusting everything in my BIOS, my processor still doesn't reach 4.7GHz. I'm really trying to figure out the right steps to fix this and feel more confident. I've already talked to a few people on Reddit about it, but they haven't been able to give me a working solution.

Specs
Intel i7 8700K
ASRock Z370 Pro4
Corsair Vengence DDR4 RAM
I've tried several things:
- Overclocked to a very high number (5.4) just to confirm it wasn't underclocking, but it didn't work.
- Changed the voltage a lot, from -60 to 120, and then fixed it between 1.2 and 1.4.
- Set AVX from 5 to 0 (auto).
- Made sure settings are saved after restarts.
- Updated the BIOS.
- Disabled EIST/SpeedShift/Turbo Boost.
- I'm using Ubuntu 16.04, but the BIOS still doesn't show any higher setting.
The current target is 4.7GHz, but the BIOS only shows up to 5.4GHz. I know 4.7 is the maximum turbo boost, so maybe it's related? When I try to disable turbo boost, I can't set a multiplier and it just turns it back on.
Anyone have suggestions on how to resolve this?
I can't access the link you shared. However, I found something similar: http://www.overclock.net/forum/5-intel-c...-7ghz.html And another reference: It seems the CPU might not be overclocked to higher speeds.
Hi,
In theory, the chip's maximum performance is usually around 5 to 5.1 GHZ, though this is less common. (silicon lottery)
Second, not all CPUs are equal; 4.7 might be the highest you can achieve.
Third, your motherboard and memory might not perform well with overclocking.
It's accurate, though I'm currently experiencing issues with three different i7 8700Ks. The BIOS indicates it's trying to be higher, but it appears locked. The motherboard and RAM should work, as there are videos showing similar configurations with the same setup.

There are several users online who can view this issue, and I believe the problem isn't tied to a particular chip since my tests on three systems showed the same issue. This makes me think it might be my configuration rather than the hardware itself.

That's accurate. I'm currently working with three different i7 8700Ks that are experiencing this problem. The BIOS indicates it's trying to increase its settings, but it appears locked. The motherboard and RAM should handle it, as there are videos showing similar setups with the same motherboard and BIOS.
If you've tried three CPUs on that system and all failed, it could point to RAM or motherboard limitations. It might even be a combination of both. Just remember not to overclock unless you're sure it's safe.
You might face issues with 10 different CPUs on various systems, especially if the power supply isn't sufficient or the motherboards aren't up to standard. If your CPU fails to overclock beyond 4 GHz, even with a better PSU and additional sockets, you may not reach the desired speeds. Testing multiple CPUs can be unreliable; consider watching a tutorial for guidance. If problems persist, the problem likely lies with the hardware rather than your setup.
