I tried an older adapter I found around 2010 (TP-Link TL-WN822N v2); it works with hosted networks after applying the Windows update and installing the Atheros driver. Make sure the adapter appears correctly in Device Manager, and the right driver is installed.
They're not useful in practice anymore, and newer options like Windows hotspot don't rely on that specific feature.
