CMOS refers to the chip that stores your game settings. Clearing it will reset your BIOS. This happened when you switched from 4-3 to 2-1, and even though you tried 4-3 before, the BIOS reset automatically.

My XMP setting is turned off, yet the RAM speed is set to 2400 MHz.
