You're curious about compatibility between your motherboard and another standard case. Please share the image or details, and I'll help determine if it fits.

They’re a compact ATX model. You now have to deal with 5-pin fan connectors (adaptable ones are available) and a basic front panel connector (schematics can usually be found).

This microATX board fits in a typical case, but the front panel connector isn’t the usual type. You might need to check if you can modify your existing case or remove the front panel entirely for compatibility. Alternatively, you could keep the OptiPlex 7010 but use the DT (desktop) version, which is bigger and works with standard mATX boards.

It should work in a typical ATX enclosure. You should be able to purchase the necessary adapters for around ten dollars each.

It mentioned SFF when you purchased it, but you wish you hadn't bought it. Would it be possible to adapt it for another case?

It seems like you're asking about the reason behind something, possibly related to adapters or another factor. Could you clarify what you mean? I'm here to help explain it further.

The SFF model features a laptop-style optical drive and offers fewer expansion slots. You're looking at the DT version. It could fit in another case, but you'll need to preserve the front panel connector. Think carefully about whether the investment is justified for a 10-year-old system—it's an Ivy Bridge (3rd gen) platform.

I could try running the PC without a case because the GPU is too large for my current case. Would that risk any damage? A few folks suggest using cardboard as an alternative.

You're getting the DT model, not the SFF. It comes with a regular MicroATX board. It's a bit of a mixed bag—semi-standard design with their own unique connectors. The SFF board is quite unusual, almost like an ITX variant.
