It really depends on the situation. Most modern 500 series chipsets come with the latest BIOS already installed. Having a BIOS Flashback feature is beneficial, so it's not a waste of money.

Several B450 boards now include larger slots for BIOS updates. The B450 Tomahawk max can run 5000-series boards without beta BIOS support.

This claim is incorrect. My Asus B450 supports Ryzen 5000 with the official BIOS. There used to be a beta BIOS, but it's long gone and several updates have followed. The most recent two BIOS versions include support for Windows 11, with TPM and secure boot enabled by default.

Newcomers often feel anxious about USB bios updates, but the process is much easier than it seems. If your board includes this capability—such as all B550 STRIX models—you won’t face any issues.
