I was just chatting about my Overwatch experience when it reminded me of a tough time with Bastion. A few months ago I picked it up again after skipping it because I didn’t want to deal with toxic behavior. At first I played casually, enjoying quick matches and arcade modes. Not in the top 500, but I’m getting better.
I ran into two different players who were really grumpy during our games. The first was on my enemy team. They kept hiding in a room for most of the match, and when they finally came out, my team called them names. One of them even said they were cowards. I thought it was silly, but we still won that game. Later, they told us to leave the area, which made me feel even more frustrated.
The other time was with my team in a 4v4 deathmatch. We lost, but it was close. The enemy had a Mercy and their rezes were scoring points quickly. My Bastion player said I’m terrible at D.Va. I was the only one who got a card end match and earned some gold. Playing as a cheap turret character with Mercy boosting damage really changed things, but it still felt unfair.
What about your own stories of dealing with grumpy players online?
BF2, BC2, 3... I haven't played MP unless it was with a big group, often just 2-3 squads. The opponents always had some who didn’t get why most players have experience and always have someone ready as backup. That’s why they got banned in BF2 and BC2 multiple times. My clantag got banned once too. RL is always entertaining, regardless of the situation. There are always players who blame their teammates for everything. These tend to be British (though I’m not taking it personally), but I’ve faced grumpy Russian players since CoD4. I’ve had OW for three days now and the comp remains locked. But I’ve already met some frustrated Russian speakers. They’re shouting in Russian, making it hard to respond. Plus, my mic isn’t connected yet, so I can’t reply with “SUOMI PERKELE.” I just messaged them in text chat. Since I don’t really care about pubs, ladders, or anything serious (it’s just getting more e-pen), I usually try to troll anyone who blames others without reason—often through text or a mic.
We played Smite last night. A young player complained about losing because someone else took his character, claiming it was to intentionally help the other team and ended up losing. When we got upset, he called us “retarded faggots.” Honestly, I don’t like people like that.
Bit of a long story. World of Tanks back in I think 9.2 or 9.3 it was right after the TOG II got taken out of the shop I was in Himmelsdorf in my own TOG II (Nicknamed HMS Hood btw) just a random battle. I was top tier on my team and spawned just south of the big hill so of course being in a TOG I knew that going for the cap was pointless so I hull down on top of the hill. The rest of my team pretty much drove like steel lemmings into the other teams guns in the open park trying to cross over to go straight over to the other teams cap. I wasn't paying that much attention because I was waiting for someone to come up the hill as usual. Well I realize that I was all alone and was about to charge over the hill and Leroy Jenkins the match because I had 10 on 1 including a pair of KV-2's the TOG's natural enemy and their top tier tanks. Then this T-34 comes racing up the hill and starts firing HE ammo into me before I decided to move from my hull down position. Not only did I have a super heavy spall liner which halves the damage of HE rounds but he was using the rapid fire 57mm which has poor HE damage to begin with but has really rapid fire. T34 comes straight on and I put a round through in lower front armor and set him on fire to the point he dies. In chat he is screaming that I am hacking somehow and the rest of his team starts racing up the hill. I stay put expecting to dish out some damage before I die even though I had 95% of my hit points left and nothing was broken and the team comes up pretty much repeating what the T34 did they load HE and start trying to pump ammo into my turret. For non players the TOG II is a super slow heavy tank with very thin armor but has a lot of raw hit points and a very accurate gun that penetrates most tanks of similar level and has a lot of ammo to boot so long battles are generally not a problem assuming you survive. I am just firing non stop into a wall of 5 other medium tanks two or three shotting them occasionally getting one shots. So far 6 tanks dead no sign of KV-2's so now its 4 on 1. Chat is full of endless threats to report me and that I am a whore, racist, that they fucked my mother last night, and just about every type of salt you can think of. I'm still shocked that I am still alive when I see a light tank squeeze past the burning wrecks that I had made I remember it being a A-20 Russian light tank he races up to me actually landing shots on my side armor but of all the tanks to try and penetrate my thin skinned TOG this wasn't the best choice as nothing was getting through, so I turned and ammo racked him. While I was turning my turret forward I see the first KV-2 finally cresting the hill, I'm thinking I'm all but dead at this point but his first shot hits one of his wrecked team mates so he now has a really long 10-15s reload so he starts pushing one of the smaller wrecks out of the way trying to move along the side of the square that sits at the time of this hill. By doing so he shows his thin side turret armor which I proceed to load two shots into before he gets ammo racked. So by now its 2 on 1 the last KV-2 is still crawling up the hill and the other surviving tank another A-20 light tank is no where to be seen, chat is still full of raging players debating if I am hacking or not. I decide not to get cocky until after killing the last KV-2 who again has to push his way past other dead tanks in order depress his gun enough to hit the only thing I am showing my turret. Last KV-2 manages to get a shot off and the RNG dictated that it went high and right of my turret to which I replied back eventually dumping 5 rounds into his front armor/driver before he bit the dust. Now its 1 on 1 I now figured that the last tank was a bot or something as he wasn't in the chat at all so I start crossing the hilltop pushing my own way through the wrecks to go to the enemy cap. I get there still no sign of him and its that way right down to the last 15 seconds before I capture the base and win the match. All this time no one has tried to capture my teams base so I figured it had to be a bot or something, all of a sudden this barely moving, barely alive A-20 tank with only 3 hit points left comes around the corner and unloads everything he has in to my front plate with no effect, so I wait for him to close the distance and get into the cap circle. Chat is now full of people telling him to use different ammo because he's not getting through and a few people started saying "Stay away from the TOG". Now that he was in the circle instead of wasting the ammo I literally just roll up and just tap his tank causing him to die instantly due to the sheer weight difference between our tanks. The guy I just killed gets on voice chat and starts screaming in Russian right up until the game cut him off. Of all the matches I've played especially with the TOG never had I survived such a one sided battle and the last death screams of that Russian kid is probably the sweetest salt I've ever had the pleasure to take part in.
Using WOTLK I spent a lot of time in WoW and dedicated a big part of my day to Wintergrasp (PvP area). I would often kill anyone I could see, which led to daily emails, death threats, and even bribes for me to avoid certain players. One person got so upset they quit the game, and I felt guilty afterward after pushing them too far.
I really dislike playing BF3/4 with friends when a big clan of around five dominates the same server. Everyone uses attack helicopters and tanks, making it super hard to play. It's tough to coordinate, especially when you try to take out one player and everyone else jumps in. Nobody ever switches to using engineers or RPGs, which makes things even worse. Teams get unbalanced because if a few players are on the other side, they quickly switch sides. I’m left with just solo players, which isn’t fun.
