ISPs often manipulate Ookla speed tests, directing traffic through their own faster routes. I’d steer clear of it. Fast.com presents a challenge since it relies on Netflix’s network; ISPs would need to approve all Netflix data to maintain those speeds. UI speedtest is usually restricted to sysadmins, and ISPs appear to be overlooking it. Personally, I’ve noticed Ookla tests can be off by 20 to 50%.

similar issues occur when downloading content like videos from a floatplane. many files, particularly small ones, stop unexpectedly without returning. upload speeds remain poor across all platforms—mega nz, YouTube, Upload Haven, MediaFire. my average is around 82 kb/s to 328 kb/s depending on the service. even when downloading from nearby servers, the performance stays inconsistent. game streaming services work well over Wi-Fi on my switch and on my PC. I’m curious if a hardware issue might be affecting my system. Previously, consistent speeds of about 40mb down and 25 up were observed in real tests. Now, after three months, the results have significantly dropped.

Absolutely, just to note. My friend will visit with his computer and achieves around 40 Mbps per second while downloading from Steam.

It's intriguing you mention that. I haven't faced any issues with speed tests showing better results than others—possibly luck with my ISP. More interestingly, I checked my connection using both Ookla and Fast.com, and the latter reported a speed 5-10Mbps higher. It seems it might come down to how transparent or not your ISP is.

This appears to relate to limitations on storage write speeds and cache performance. Verify your disk utilization through Task Manager (Windows environment). There could also be problems with antivirus programs—try downloading a large file from Steam and monitor Task Manager activity. Web-based speed tests typically reflect RAM and CPU performance, not persistent storage. You might notice high scores for streaming but actual downloads constrained by your drive’s speed and cache. Fast connections like 10Mbps are generally close to realistic limits. Few ISPs seem to offer this kind of testing, though I no longer rely on Ookla. I’ve noticed discrepancies between contracted fiber speeds (e.g., 600/600) and measured results—around 800 on Speedtest, ~350 for faster modes. I used to develop speed-testing tools to ensure consistent results due to these constraints. Networking isn’t a priority for me anymore.

Yup, here in Malta a local company paired up with them and did a epeedtest website, on the ookla. Official is around 30 to 40 down and on my isp site it's 50 to 60 down. But my speeds are slow since we live in a rural area

Your hard drive is almost empty and your internet connection seems unstable. I don’t know what’s causing this.

Are you confusing MBps and Mbps? They represent different measurements. Your download speed shown in the screenshot is 34.2 Mbps, which is roughly 4.2 MBps—comparable to the write speed on that SSD. Taking 34.2 Mbps from Steam is acceptable. I can reach about 50-60 Mbps occasionally, and I have a symmetrical gigabit fiber connection. VALVE doesn’t appear to be restricting your bandwidth usage.

I don’t believe I’m confusing them. I’m really unsure what’s going on.
