If you own one of these 16C/32T CPU please tell me what you are doing as a cooling solution, case/case fans.
What kind of idle temps are you getting? Load temps?
I don't really wish to muddy the water too much, but I picked one of these up to use for my personal gaming rig. I am having some pretty considerable temperature control issues in a Lian Li 011D Mini with a HUGE Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler (it has 2 fans) and (7) case fans. Taking covers off actually makes the problem worse, as unlikely as that sounds.

Adrenalin is installed and all chipset and graphics drivers are updated, including that latest release chipset. Windows 11, fully updated.
I have this paired with an RX7800XT. The system is shutting down at random under a gaming load and will either soft crash to desktop or black screen crash. HWI is reporting temp hot spot at ~81C right before the crash. I know these are supposed to throttle at ~90C. That same GPU has been rock solid in another system since I purchased it on release. I do not suspect an issue with it.
I am having an exceptionally hard time with reporting programs as they are almost all showing different temps, voltages, and utilization. I understand aspects of it being due to the type of reporting which is the default for the specific program but between Task Manager, RIVA, HWI, Core Temp, and Ryzen Master there is barely anything aside from voltage coming anywhere close to each other.
I have on order some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme. I am not expecting miracles but is regarded as one of the best pastes on the market right now. I will also be taking a look at the previous application to be sure I have a good spread and the cooler tightened down evenly. This situation is being a major PITA and not really sure where to go aside from a possible RMA.
I have had very good system stability with a 5600 and a 6600XT, so don't suspect anything wrong with motherboard (related) and RAM.
Hello, i dropped the voltage on these cpus and the voltage levels were extremely high, often hitting the 1.5v limit. I kept it at 1.35v and left the clocks on auto. The only temps I've ever seen are up to 70°C max. Also, i wanted to mention that the Ryzen 9 5900x is a 12-core chip, but i also faced issues with it, which was the only workaround i could find without the system shutting down.
I'm using a DeepCool LS520 to manage the cooling and security, but even with a 7 heatpipe cooler and DeepCool Assassin IV, it wasn't enough to keep things stable, so i switched to water cooling.
i also made some adjustments to other settings. i lowered my ram speed to 3000, but it didn’t work well with 4 sticks running at once. i never used ryzen master, which caused the chip to become unstable and unreliable, so i removed it from the system. additionally, i checked for any msi issues that might be forcing the cpu to extreme temperatures and overriding amd’s original boost settings—this was pushing voltage beyond safe limits. also, note there are two ccds instead of one like in the 5600, so one will generate more heat than the other as they compete for cooling. air coolers are sufficient for a single cdp, but with multiple units it becomes difficult to dissipate heat effectively since the air cooler can’t keep up quickly enough. this led to my gpu getting quite hot, especially with a large radiator next to it. when i switched to water cooling and reduced the temperature by 10c, the radiator moved away from the gpu and improved heat removal. this is why i still prefer water cooling for more than one cdp. if your case supports it, consider going higher—like 360—and ensure there’s enough space (about 2 cm-3 cm) around the radiator ends for proper airflow. it’s crucial that the paste fully covers the entire ihs on these dual-chip models.
I was quite dissatisfied with the dependability of the Curve Optimizer and the automatic PBO feature. There was a modest improvement in clock speed from 4800 to 4950, but it introduced various complications. Since it was configured to write to the BIOS, I had to reset the CMOS and reconfigure the fan curves to match my preferences. In fairness, the fans are already set to the "Smart Fan" mode on the MSI motherboard, which performs well on desktops. Adjusting them to a higher performance curve doesn’t significantly affect temperatures and is excessively noisy.
Note: The Dark Rock tower has a silent switch that can limit fan speed; it’s currently set to performance mode.
The BIOS includes a gaming boost option, but it remains disabled. Only the "XMP" profile is active.
I own a 240 AIO cooler, which is over five years old. It functioned fine during the previous build about a month ago, but I’m hesitant to rely on it now. I was hoping this air cooling solution would provide not just noise reduction, but also better reliability and safety against failure.
i don't blame you, it's just bad lol. i spent around three weeks reviewing several youtube videos on how to adjust this workaround. cpu voltage> offset mode> cpu offset mode use minus - > offset voltage 0.17500 was what i set mine to, but your mileage may vary. you might only get as low as 0.15 because of the 16 cores versus my 12. so i would try 0.1 then adjust to 0.15. view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X21gGLS4h9k this will help limit the voltage and bring temperatures down. if you're really desperate for air cooling, you can do the same steps. additionally, set a maximum temperature limit so the cpu doesn't exceed safe levels—msi and asus boards seem determined to shut it down near 90 degrees. setting it to 82 or 85 would be the safest option. to configure a temperature cap in the msi bios, go to the "OC" (overclocking) section, then "advanced cpu configuration," and look for "set thermal point" or similar settings.
Looking to take a few notes and review the video. Better to give it a shot.
no worries, let me check how it's going. the fan near the front, close to the side fans, is turning in the opposite direction when it should. this means the airflow won't work well and will just escape through the case before it can cool anything. try changing it and see if it helps. for the cpu clocks, keep the board on auto—this lets the CPU choose the best settings without risking a crash. good luck, and hope it works!
I made a few quick fixes for the video. The .050 model scored 1384 on Cinebench 24 at a peak temperature of 64.9. The .075 model achieved 1385 with a max temp of 62.9, letting the CPU reach 4950 and reaching a max voltage of 1.406. I plan to adjust further and test it in BG3 for more results. Thanks a lot!
