Super functions for PCIe x2 yet claims compatibility with x16?
Hello, I purchased a second-hand system but noticed the GPU operates on PCI X2 power. After some research, I learned it might be due to a low-power GPU. I checked the NVIDIA website and saw that the 2070 Super requires at least 650W of power to function properly. There’s no visible damage on the graphics card or motherboard.
I tried various solutions:
- Changed the PCIe slot in the BIOS,
- Updated the BIOS,
- Reset the BIOS,
- Installed the latest GPU drivers.
The BIOS shows an option for PCIe X16, but the GPU doesn’t work on that setting.
Do you think the issue is related to insufficient power supply? Also, my motherboard and graphics card both support X16, there’s no physical damage, and I found out my 500W PSU is actually around 350W.
We identified the GPU to be running in x2 mode by checking its operational settings.
Did you also tap the question mark next to the bus interface details (this is for GPU-Z)? This action will ensure the GPU runs at maximum performance (power-saving feature you might notice). If this doesn't resolve the issue, verify that the GPUs' contacts are clean and securely placed in the motherboard slot. What is the model of your motherboard?
My motherboard is an Asus Prime H510M-D. I also performed the test you mentioned, checking the GPU connections. I believe the issue lies with the 500w PSU, though I found online that its maximum is around 350w. I’m curious, does a low-power PSU impact the GPU performance, such as forcing it to operate at PCIe x2?
The low power PSU is likely to fail and cause the system to shut down. You should adjust the PCIe version in your BIOS (it's probably set to AUTO). If it's AUTO, consider setting it to 3.
Sure, here are your full PC specifications, including the PSU make and model. Let's discuss this further.
Hello, thank you for sharing your specifications. Here are the details: Frisby FR-PS50F12B 500 W Power Supply, 16 GB 3200 MHZ RAM (brand not remembered), i5 10400f, Msi Ventus OC 2070 Super 8 GB, Pny CS900 SSD SATA 3.0 2.5" 480 GB, Asus H510M-D motherboard. Also, the processor doesn't support 3200 MHz, so your RAM operates at 2666 MHz.
