Steam OS?
Steam OS?
Are you thinking about using Steam OS as a temporary solution before you can afford another Windows license? In terms of browsing the web and choosing games, you're likely limited to Steam's offerings, though Origin might be a minor hassle. It could take around a month before you can get Windows again because your income isn't steady. Another option you're weighing is Windows 10 Insider, but it feels like a risky decision since it's still experimental. I'm okay with that as long as the software works properly. If you're interested, I've built my system with an I5 4410 processor, GTX 970 graphics, EVGA RAM, an 8GB memory stick, a 1TB storage drive, a solid modular power supply, and a compact Raijintek case. TL;DR: Steam OS or Windows 10 Insider as a short-term fix? Also, check out my post—I put in a lot of effort. (/sarcasm, for those who need it)
Purchase Windows 10 on G2A as soon as it launches. SteamOS isn't great.
On Ubuntu-based systems, you can achieve great results compared to SteamOS. Launch Steam and sort all titles under "SteamOS+Linux". If you find games you enjoy or already play there, switch away from SteamOS to a Linux variant such as Ubuntu, Xubuntu, or Lubuntu. SteamOS works fine but isn't ideal for a full desktop. You can also use Wine to run Windows apps—some perform well while others struggle. If most of your favorite titles only work natively on Windows, consider checking the Technical Preview or purchasing a low-cost key from G2A or that subreddit, which typically costs around $20.
Choose SteamOS games on Ubuntu-based Linux systems (like Ubuntu or Linux Mint). This lets you use your PC for other tasks besides gaming. If you need Windows-only titles that don’t work with WINE, you’re limited to Windows 10 Preview.
I would choose Windows 10 TP and purchase it once I have the opportunity.
SteamOS runs Debian Linux with Steam built-in, featuring some tweaks. Internet surfing works, though many games remain unavailable.
MS revealed they’re offering Win 10 to all preview users without any questions. Sign up for MS Insider, install the Preview, and once it launches you’ll receive a genuine copy of 10 at no charge. Those who buy Windows now are clearly mistaken. Forget it—I was mistaken.
