I’m certain you can connect the latest Xbox One S controller via Bluetooth. It’s likely you can also link almost any USB device, like a gamepad, mouse, or keyboard. Driving wheels and flightsticks remain uncertain.

I find the steam controller's appearance unappealing and would prefer not to be compelled to use it.

It's... distinct. I haven't actually tried it, but I've seen many reviews about it. For games that work well with a typical console controller, like racing titles or third-person action games (such as Your Assassin's Creed and WatchDogs), an XBO Controller is likely the better choice for most players. For FPS games, an XBO Controller probably offers superior precision, though the Steam Controller provides more accurate input since its pads act like trackpads. In slower RTS-style games like Civ 5/6, the Steam Controller can make them playable on a standard controller. It also supports multiple modes—mainly adjusting the trackpad behavior, and in one setting it mimics a regular controller's analog sticks. You could also use a KB+Mouse, but that isn't the best option for couch gaming. I'd personally prefer an XBO Controller if I were to purchase one.

It offers a tool to integrate every wheel function along with likely flight controls.

In that scenario, I'd mention the steam connection as something useful for people with specific requirements. Still, that's not my opinion. lol.
