How can I fix really slow download speed? Usually my internet was around 10MB/s, but recently it has just gotten slower to 1MB/s without any warning. One thing that happened is when downloading game on Steam like Team Fortress 2 (which is about 20 GB), it used to take me about half an hour before I finished. Now it takes almost three hours and forty four minutes!
Sorry for the late reply, I tried almost everything on my computer but nothing worked then when the troubleshooter said that message I unplugged and rewired the part of the cable going into the router and now it is fixed! On speedtest I get about 94Mb/s which means about 7MB/s. Thank goodness it worked because if it didn't I would have had to buy a new ethernet cable.
It might take a while because we are having special winter deals right now, and everyone is trying to get all their stuff downloaded before the holiday arrives.

Speedtest says nothing, actually because it only shows megabits, while steam uses megabytes. So they aren't fighting on the same scale. Speed is just slow, which is weird when I have gigabit plans. Sometimes games go fast and sometimes they lag a lot. I didn't check the data centers to find out if that's why.
It might also be slow because of the cold winter weather. Maybe some of your home or network cables have broken down over time and can't handle fast data anymore. Check all wires, plugs, and other connections. Look for signs like damage from moisture, cracked insulation, chew marks from rodents, etc.

Even though I haven't seen this happening for years, you might have a cable or port that's moving at 10 mbps. Let's check your PC's ethernet status first to see the speed. Make sure in the settings for the ethernet port it is set to auto. Sometimes the problem isn't just your computer; maybe the connection between the router and the modem if these devices are different boxes is what's causing it. The light color or something on the router could show you how fast that line is. Do you have another device you can use to test the speed? Using a second device would be the easiest way to tell if the internet service provider connection is broken. Even just using a cell phone on wifi should be able to get over 10 mbps.

On Steam he downloads at 5MB/s while I only get 1MB/s... "I would first check the ethernet status on your PC to see what it says." Make sure in the settings for the ethernet port it is set to auto. How do I do that? I guess I go to the IP settings and make the ip assignment auto? right now it is on not auto and there are two DNS written in there
Here it would be cool if someone knew which Microsoft worker thinks changing things every time is smart. If users could call them and ask what guide they should follow, that'd be nice. I used to have links to YouTube videos, but those change depending on your Windows version or even the patch level. It would be better if I gave you a command you could copy and paste like in Linux, but the people who work for Microsoft say everything is just a phone and you need to swipe left or right. You'll just have to dig around. It's an setting on the ethernet hardware, not about IP addresses or DNS.
