I’m trying to understand this odd problem. When I launch Steam and need an update, the game starts updating but then my internet suddenly drops. After closing and reopening Steam, I get back online, but the error message appears: “Default gateway is not available – problem solved.” I’ve updated my network drivers, installed them separately without using Killernic, restricted download speeds in Steam, adjusted the download region, turned off Windows firewall, and disabled Malwarebytes—the only antivirus I use. I’m on a 300/60 connection and Steam is the only app that behaves this way. Other programs work fine. I’m unsure if it’s related to my ISP’s cable modem, since my PC connects directly to the modem without any router or similar device.

Additionally, I can easily download and update from battle.net or Origin without any issues.

It seems the issue might be related to your modem's firewall or NAT settings. I can only provide general guidance without more specifics.

Uncertain about more details, but it sounds odd if issues only occur with Steam. It’s strange that it’s just related to Steam. I’m trying another set of drivers without killerNIC software again, since the last time I bought a motherboard with killerNIC it was really frustrating.

Steam relies on a distributed server to deliver fast downloads, which may bypass your firewall. Consider capping Steam’s download speed at 16 KB/s. Does the issue persist after this adjustment?

Tried capping it at 10 mb/s during the last incident, but it didn’t help. Setting it to 1 mb/s seems to resolve the problem, suggesting the modem might be overloaded. Previously, with 100/40 speeds, I never faced this issue. After upgrading to 300/60, the problem disappeared. Also, the new modem worked fine during the upgrade. It’s possible the old modem is malfunctioning. When I disconnect, it resets completely—trying to connect after disconnection failed.

It's a Netgear C6250EMR. Both firewall protection and port scan/DoS protection were active. I attempted to disable them, but I managed to download a game smoothly at full speed without interruptions. Maybe it was the reason, or just a coincidence?

It didn't work as expected. What do you mean by "that's just dumb"? If you're trying to turn it off, I'm not sure I understand. Are you asking how to disable something that seems simple?

Turn them off individually to identify the problematic setting. You may also need to check which ports are available for Steam. Forwarding those ports should resolve issues similar to yours.
