Star Citizen: Journey from Beginner to Planet - PG showcase
If the planet is procedural, each time someone approaches it will likely see a different landscape. Features like mountains might appear differently, even though the overall theme remains similar. They demonstrated gameplay where a space station lands smoothly on a planet, but the shallow atmosphere—possibly due to the planet's size—poses a challenge. The team hopes to fix this issue.
Planets rely on a fixed starting value so each generation produces identical landscapes, much like the seed mechanism in Minecraft. The planet originated from a massive asteroid intended for an upcoming planetary zone. They added atmospheric effects mainly for a visual showcase, using the asteroid as their base material. The design is still in development and not yet complete.
It’s designed to create content on the fly rather than storing it all at once. This avoids needing constant compilation or keeping large files on your device. It helps with flexibility and efficiency.
Creating a planet the size of Earth by hand would be extremely time-consuming, let alone covering multiple planets. High-quality PG delivers impressive outcomes while significantly reducing development time. They apply the same PG technology to asteroids and space stations as well. As mentioned in the video, they can't save the entire planet due to memory constraints. PG enables the planet to be generated instantly without needing storage space.
