I'm unsure if this should be placed in the GPU section or not. If it fits there, a mod would need to move it. I own a GTX EVGA 780 that's been overclocked to 1150 base clock. For some reason, I experience huge frame drops in Metro 2033. It drops from 80 FPS at 1080p to 30 for a few seconds then jumps back up to 120, and it keeps fluctuating around 100. It's usually okay but varies a lot. This is the most frustrating game because of those sudden drops. If I raise it to 1440p, the same dips occur, never dropping below 30, even at 720p. It's really odd. Also, my GPU only reaches up to 91% usage when set to 104, but my 780 never goes above 71% even with throttling at 76%. This only happens in this game. Is it just poorly optimized? Although it looks good, it isn't like Metro:Last Light.

Uncertain about the issue, here it is for reference.

metro 2033 is an intense power user, similar to Crysis, but instead of optimizing for performance, it’s built to push your system to its limits and perform poorly.

Do you enable V-sync? Yes, Metro 2033 (non-reduced version) is recognized as quite challenging to operate.

Adjust the temperature to around 80°C, which is generally acceptable. However, the frequency might be lower than expected. It still occurs occasionally.

Works well for me too, though my setup is much less powerful. Also, I assume you have a clean, updated version? The core game tends to lag on certain configurations.

It works well on your setup without major drops. I used to face stability problems when the OC was set too high, though performance wasn’t as strong. Trying physX disabled might help, even if it’s unlikely to change much on your rig.

It is usually fine, but at parts it goes to 30. Yes it is legal. Alright I will set it to 80. I even looked in the config files to see if anything was out of the ordinary but it is fine. Even my software engineering professor is stumped.

It doesn't matter. On the metro, the last light switching off gave me a big speed increase in FPS.

I didn't notice V-Sync available in the settings menu.
