Skyrim crashes to the desktop with numerous mods installed.
I spent the night tweaking mods, always restarting to check for fixes. Now the game runs fine, but once playing for a while it just closes abruptly—no warnings, no popups, just everything disappearing. Any cause? I’m running 102 active mods and don’t want you to tell me I need to turn them all off one by one.
It seems the game is running low on memory and shutting down. From what I remember during my Skyrim modding experience, this is something you’ll need to understand and adapt to when using many mods.
Initiate the game session. It seems LOOT might be related to load order, possibly preventing it from starting properly... Alternatively, it could be conserving resources that are accumulating. Check for memory usage increases and consider a memory patch. Also verify if your save file size is growing. Scripts can become corrupted and affect saves.
LOOT helps structure your file loading sequence. It's useful even if you don't need it. https://loot.github.io/ Also try TES5Edit.
Your running SKSE (Skyrim script extender) means the memory patch is already active. It doesn’t ensure your game will run smoothly—it mainly helps with heavy mod usage. If you’re not using SKSE, installing it would be a good idea. If I remember right, there’s a tool called Boss or similar that lets you arrange mod load order for better compatibility. It can also merge some mods and produce compatibility patches. Been a while, so please forgive any confusion.
Open TES5Edit to identify the problematic mod. With more than 250 installed, the issue may stem from recent NVIDIA driver updates. Make sure your drivers are current to avoid instability.
I surrender!!! Those programs meant to assist ordering things are clearly malfunctioning, they keep throwing errors. I actually got it before too—Skyrim worked fine without crashes, but the FPS was low. So I reloaded some mods hoping it would help, but then it crashed again.
