Signal drops during specific games, causing shutdowns. Requires force restart to resolve.
Hey there, I've been facing this issue for a few weeks now and it's really frustrating. When playing tough games like Star Citizen and Apex Legends, my monitors suddenly lose signal at the same time. I can still hear the audio and the system keeps running, but the only way to restore the connection is to power off and restart. The graphics card also seems to overheat its fans during this loss of signal and returns to normal after a reboot. This doesn't happen when I play less demanding games like League of Legends, nor does it occur during stress tests such as Superposition Benchmark, Furmark, or OCCT (I usually run them for no more than 10 minutes). Sometimes the problem appears 5-10 minutes into a game, other times it can take an hour or more before it shows up. I also notice Windows Event logs indicating faults in dwm.exe. I've read many similar threads, but there doesn't seem to be a clear solution. Possible causes could range from driver problems, BIOS issues, NVIDIA settings, GSYNC, power supply, GPU, or even the motherboard itself. Since I don’t have spare parts on hand, I’m wondering if there are steps I can take before buying new hardware. This machine is brand new (about six months old), so I hope it’s a simple configuration or driver fix that hasn’t been tried yet and resolves the issue. Here are my specs:
- Intel® Core™ Processor i9-11900K
- GeForce RTX 3080
- 10GB GDDR6X (32GB, Crucial Ballistix Sport)
- GIGABYTE Z590 UD AC ATX
- ARGB, 802.11ac, 2.5GbE LAN
- PCIe x16, x1, M.2 slots
- Power supply: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB NVMe, 80 Plus Gold
Windows version: Home Edition, BIOS from American Megatrends International, dated F2, 1/6/2021.
I also have two LG 27GL83A-B monitors (27-inch, QHD, NVIDIA G-SYNC compatible) connected via DisplayPort, both at 1440p and 144Hz. Any advice would be really helpful!
Initially focus on updating or reinstalling the drivers. This seems to point toward a driver-related problem based on my past experience with a computer I built hastily. The reported issue appears related to this subject. Additionally, test another display connected via a different output (like an HDMI port) to determine if the same problem persists. This could clarify whether the issue lies in software/GPU or in monitor connections.
EDIT: Also verify temperatures of your card if feasible. It might indicate a cooling concern.

Thanks for your response! I've already attempted the DDU process and plan to try it once more to check for improvements. I'll also test with a different monitor using HDMI to determine if the problem persists. Based on what you mentioned, it doesn't seem to be related to temperature, as my GPU temperatures rarely exceed 76°C even during intense gameplay.
On the hardware side, it might involve overcurrent protection or other safeguards, and maybe additional components. On software, it could be a crashed driver that didn’t restart properly.
Reviewed the DDU procedure once more. Plan to test one of the games that causes the lost signal problem briefly to check if it persists.
The ongoing sound, black screens, and DWM crashes indicate a software or driver issue rather than a hardware fault. If the chipset or driver stopped responding, the OS should trigger a TDR. A full southbridge failure would typically result in darkness despite audio, which isn't observed here. Possible causes include memory errors, power supply instability, OS corruption, or malware. Memory problems affect all apps but only specific games, while malware is unlikely to interfere with DWM. PSU voltage issues should appear quickly during testing. Based on this, the most probable cause is OS corruption. Run the following commands in a command prompt (shutdown /r just restarts): fsutil dirty set c: shutdown /r /t 0. When prompted, wait and then execute DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth sfc /scannow. If you see warnings about memory compatibility or APPID {9CA88EE3-ACB7-47C8-AFC4-AB702511C276} DistributedCOM, these commands should resolve the problem.
