After applying the Tuesday's update, I observed that when I turned off the computer, the screen went black, yet the system remained powered on. The only way to shut it down was using the power button.

Attempt to initiate a system restore to an earlier point before the update. Check if this restores the shutdown capability of your system. Currently, it might indicate that a device is marked with a yellow exclamation in Device Manager.

that's why i asked for confirmation of the item.
the KB number for the update would assist in addressing that.
i believe system restore wouldn't be effective here, as it clears everything.

It might just be a failure to shut down correctly, which keeps the Windows shutdown stuck. If you're prepared to restart, open an elevated command prompt and type the following command...
