The question hinges on whether you need to act now or save for Fallout 4. Consider your current situation and goals.

It's not crucial that Bethesda games require prior experience to be enjoyable, and honestly, trying a fresh Vegas experience was more exciting for me.

It's not mandatory, but it's a great way to pass the time until Fallout 4. I recommend trying New Vegas.

Fallout 3 and NV are among the best games I've played. I just finished it again and I'm starting a new Vegas tonight or tomorrow, probably.

Fallout 3 feels dull and unengaging; save yourself some time.

Fallout 3 isn't designed for modern systems beyond Windows 7, so I'd choose New Vegas instead.

In my view, Fallout 3 was significantly superior to New Vegas. The world felt more vibrant, there were numerous activities to engage in, and it offered a more varied experience compared to New Vegas. While I personally don’t have strong preferences for open-world titles, they don’t stand out against well-crafted linear games. New Vegas lacked innovation and didn’t bring anything fresh. The environment was uninspired, with little visual or interactive content beyond the usual. (It’s amusing that a DLC was released for new weapons and ammo, but it fell short of expectations.) Still, Fallout’s storylines are compelling regardless of which entry you play. The overall experience remains consistent whether you start with the original games or later titles. This applies to every Elder Scrolls game as well.

Played FO3 over the weekend and realized how impressive the setting and vibe are. NV has improved its mechanics and storytelling, though FO3 still falls short compared to NV for environments. I faced significant problems with FO3 and Windows 7 on various PCs, often crashing frequently, but using Windows 10 has been smooth. After reinstalling it with all my mods, I’ve had no crashes during a solid 6-7 hours of play.

You didn’t need to import files; you just downloaded FO3 and started playing.
