Should I crank up my gaming settings to make things faster?
Hey guys! My PC is an ASUS TUF Gaming Plus Z490 with the I5-10600K. I have a Noctua NH-U12S, 2x8GB HyperX Fury RAM running at 2400MHz, and an Asus GTX 1080 Ti FSP Aurum Gold. I also have a 700w Antec NX600 case. This setup is all for gaming. My main game is Modern Warfare, but something feels off. Even though my GPU hits 100%, the CPU stays around 90%. Is there really any point in trying to overclock my RAM or CPU? Or maybe I should try overclocking my GPU? Thanks!
Not every game will use all 12 threads all the time. If two or three threads drop below 85-90%, your overall CPU usage drops by 7 to 10%. When you hear "sizzling said," it means you don't want your CPU stuck at 100% because that actually shows a bottleneck, and having a bottleneck with just one CPU is impossible. You shouldn't have that ever since you only use one CPU. Getting both the CPU and GPU hitting 100% at once is only possible if you force it during stress testing. Your system is running fine exactly how it is now.
You can boost your graphics card with Afterburner (there are tons of videos about it too). Turn on XMP for your RAM when you start up. But remember, today's computers fight a very tough battle and don't run as smoothly as they used to.
You should try this: Open the BIOS menu and look at the AI Tweaker tab (or hit F7 if you don't see it). Find the XMP setting under AI Overclock Tuner, pick a profile you want to use, then press F7 to quit that tool. Press F10 to save your changes and restart your computer so the new settings work.
The fact that your 10600K has a K processor makes it an amazing overclocker, so you should try it. This card is built for boosting clocks, and you can easily hit a solid all-core speed of around 5GHz by tweaking the multiplier and memory voltage down to about 1.3v or even less. Overall, it's definitely worth looking at how much you can push these settings. On your graphics card side, using MSI Afterburner will help boost both the CPU and RAM too. You might find some great guides for overclocking a 1080Ti as well. When it comes to RAM, maybe just a small bump is enough since the focus should be on the main processor and GPU.
