Setting up your rig for Star Citizen
I'm excited about the upcoming release of Star Citizen. Although it's still a while away, I'm getting ready for it. My setup includes: CPU - Intel Core I5-4690k, Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 RAM - Adata 1600 8g (2x4), GPU - EVGA FTW GTX 660, Case - Corsair 540 Air, Storage - WD Black 7200rpm 1Tb / Samsung Evo 840 128g SSD, PSU - Seasonic X-series 750w 80+gold, Cooling - Noctua NH-U14S. I think a more powerful graphics card would be ideal. Maybe adding around 16GB of RAM instead of the current 8GB would help. For the CPU, it's a noticeable upgrade from my old A10 5700 fm2 APU. Any recommendations? My budget is limited to what I can afford for Christmas and my birthday (December 31st). Fortunately, fall is here, giving me a chance to collect some extra points by gathering leaves.
I would accumulate savings to purchase the top-quality graphics card available.
Purchase the 780/R9 290 or hold off for the Maxwell/R9 300; that processor would be significantly superior. You might also consider the 4790K, as Star Citizen aims to utilize as many cores as feasible.
They're targeting next-gen cards that run the game smoothly. I know my 780 does well with dogfighter at top settings and 1080p. They mentioned i7 would be better, but I'm skeptical. I think your 4690k should work after overclocking. For RAM, I'd say 8GB is more than enough, maybe a bit more if you're upgrading. If you decide to wait, go with the 880 for the GPU—5820k with 300-350$ and Intel 6 cores plus HT and 16GB RAM could work. DDR4 memory might be pricey though.
The processor is sufficient, the memory is ample. I recommend the R9 290—if you can afford it, go for the Sapphire Vapor-x R9 290x because Star Citizen allows that version.
What equipment do you have? Your phone struggles with photos—it looks really bad with those red heat sinks, brown fans, black case, gold RAM, and purple and white fans. Right now you're only doing a turbo overclock just to avoid damaging anything before your online classes start in a week. Should I look into getting another SSD? Your 128GB seems to fill up quickly. I’d really appreciate seeing real specs and prices for the 800-series. I’ve thought about Radeon cards, but without any news of new GPUs soon, I’m leaning toward Nvidia.
It seems likely they'll also back Direct X12, which would likely make Mantle unsuitable overall. (I'm guessing they're considering Direct X12)
