Set up a Minecraft server on a Raspberry Pi.
I plan to set up a modded Minecraft server on a Raspberry Pi 3 B, supporting up to five players. The device has 1Gb RAM, runs at 1.2GHz with four cores, and is powered by an 8GB flash drive (about 23.23MB read and 10MB write). I’m curious if anyone familiar with similar projects knows how to configure this on the Pi and whether it would function properly. Thanks!
RAM is likely the main issue here. Remember that this involves DDR2 memory and isn't fast enough compared to your computer's drives. Searching it on YouTube might cause problems for the Raspberry Pi, even for a small server. It's better to host it locally or use a VPS for around $3 a month. I’d recommend OVH.com.
I’d prefer to purchase it, but the cost is quite high compared to DIY. Can you check if there’s an option to upgrade the RAM for such devices?
It won't work. A single gigabyte of RAM isn't sufficient for a vanilla server, and the power consumption on the Raspberry Pi, while adequate for its typical tasks, is far too low to handle a smooth, lag-free operation. Plus, relying on a USB drive for data storage would cause constant, total blockage during use. Consider renting a server for $7.99 per month instead.
Servers are costly alternatives to PI. Creeperhost and OVH come with higher prices than PI.
