Selecting a PSU for replacement
Selecting a PSU for replacement
Hello, I just want to check if the Thermaltake Smart SE SPS-630AH3CCB 630W Power Supply is good. I recently had my PSU fail and I need a replacement, but my budget is limited. I can't order online because shipping costs are too high for my country, so I have to visit the nearest store and found this PSU.
The PSU is likely been in that computer shop for a long time due to its outdated design and poor build quality.
What parts are you energizing? If it's a 15-year-old office machine, it could work, though the power supply was quite unpleasant even when brand new. For a PC with a graphics card, I wouldn't place the PSU in the same room as this computer, just in case someone tries to sneak in and replaces it.
PC specifications
Intel core i5 4690
14GB RAM
1TB hard drive
RX 570 graphics card
It has never been used. The box remains sealed, indicating it is new, though it was constructed many years ago. A 3-year warranty is considered minimal. Quality ratings range from 5 to 7, with 10+ years being a strong indicator of a reliable PSU. For this PC, I recommend choosing a SeaSonic GM12 or beQuiet! Pure Power 11. That's my suggestion. What other PSUs are available in the store?
This 3-year warranty really highlights the manufacturer's confidence in the product's quality and longevity. These warranties often reflect a company's assurance that their units will perform reliably over time, as replacing them for free would be costly.
Not all PSUs are created equal. Many models rely on electrolytic capacitors filled with a liquid electrolyte, which has a limited lifespan. Over time, this substance can degrade, leading to reduced performance and eventual failure. Even if you never use the PSU, the electrolyte still degrades, potentially affecting other components.
In short, these capacitors are prone to self-degradation when not in use. Powering them up can trigger premature failure, which could cascade into more significant issues. I would strongly advise against using this PSU under any circumstances.
Corsair CV650 650W 80 PLUS Bronze is a high-performance power supply.
