Your setup sounds logical. You're planning to connect your Asus router to a network switch, then the switch to your PC and NAS. Make sure the switch supports Gigabit Ethernet for smooth performance. For a NAS, you'll need at least two Gigabit connections. A good Gigabit switch would be one rated for 2 or more ports at 1000 Mbps.

Most unmanaged network switches are similar. Choose popular brands such as TP-Link or Netgear with sufficient ports for your requirements.

Will the NAS reach 2.5g? If not, start both separately, spend the $20, and head out with your mom for a burger.

Managed systems have rules and controls in place, while unmanaged ones operate without such oversight. The key is how much guidance or management is applied.

Managed switches offer features such as configuring ports for particular speeds, VLANs, and basic Layer 3 routing. However, these advanced options come from high-end commercial brands like Cisco and HPE/Aruba—unnecessary complexity for a typical home network.

No, all two bays are gigabit. Do you require additional ports from the switch? Is the router running out of ports?

My router isn’t positioned easily—I can’t relocate it freely and only have one cable connected to my PC at the moment.
