something that doesn’t feel overly large (such as stock Ubuntu) runs up and down on a hard drive just like Windows 8 does on an SSD

Using this setup, I’d allocate 8-16 GB of swap space on the HDD, set up an 8GB partition on the SSD with the remaining SSD partitions designated as "/home". Ensure your bootloader is installed on the SSD and configure the larger drive’s partition to have a suitable mount point for your main storage.

Place the swap on the faster side of the hard drive. (If I remember right, the front side is the quickest.)

It seems the quick startup time you're experiencing isn't as impressive as it might seem.

The concern is whether we truly require it to start in five seconds, alongside having quick storage for gaming. --If there isn't room for both--

If I were the operator, I'd likely install the games on an SSD first, then use another SSD as a boot drive as soon as it's available.

on the topic of boot speeds, i have an unoptimized linux mint 16 install that reboots from desktop to desktop in 36 seconds. (unoptimized as in clean install without any drivers, running in software display mode)
