Ryzen 7900x or Ryzen 7900 non-x?
Ryzen 7900x or Ryzen 7900 non-x?
The Ryzen 7900X and its non-X counterpart are nearly identical in price near my location. Since I focus on video editing with occasional gaming, I favor energy-efficient processors. The 7900X isn’t particularly efficient, so upgrading to the non-X model might be a better choice. Regarding performance, using the 65W Eco Mode won’t match the 7900X’s output—it will be similar but not as strong.
I’d prefer the X option if they match the price. Using binned silicon would help. Keeping voltage away from direct contact and just tweaking power caps suggests better performance with similar power draw. I’m not sure about the ECO feature; usually, the real power cap is about 35% more than the rated TDP. For a 65W TDP component, the actual limit would be around 88W. Putting it at 65W would actually be less than a standard 65W part.
I hadn't considered that before, and indeed the X model costs roughly $15 more than the non-X version. My aim is to lower the chip's power consumption, so using an eco mode at 88W should work similarly or even better. Also, does lowering the clock speed also cut idle power usage?
Previous 7900x buyer with a friend who owns a 7900. Both situations are quite alike. Get the more affordable option.
Have you ever experimented with undervolting or Eco settings to cut power usage? For me, the non-X option is $10 cheaper compared to X variant. I’m really focused on power use, but if the performance boost is just 5-6%, I’d pick the more efficient chip.
