It all comes down to how much electricity these chips use right now. This power usage has been killing them too fast for an early death. Remember that different things mean different things when it comes to electricity. Voltage isn't the same as current. When a chip works normally, it controls its own speed on its own: if you need less work, it uses more voltage and less energy. If you need more work, it uses less voltage and more energy. But with manual OverCurrent (OC) protection turned off, the chips stop managing themselves now. So it's up to you: lighter loads mean lower voltage and higher current usage. Heavier loads also mean lower voltage and higher current usage.
I've been reading and watching those Buildzoid videos, which helped me return to PBO because it's much cooler here in AC mode during hot summer days.
That actually causes quite a bit of trouble because lots of people all over the world get worried right now and start screaming, saying "OMG my PC is going to explode my CPU has hit 100 degrees Celsius OMG!!! What can I do?????" I really hope motherboard makers would teach customers better instead of forcing weird extra features that aren't needed. Just a small note on how to turn off a setting when you open the box lid explaining this "Boost Magic Thingies" and a tiny bit about what it does if you don't like it. Something probably takes only five minutes to write down and costs almost nothing. Cheers! PD: I have never used and will never use any auto-oc tools motherboards add to their products. I do not like messing with the stock settings unless I am 100% sure what has changed. Also, I don't want a turbo jet noise getting too loud near my head, so I will always look for a CPU that has enough power (that I can afford) but at a reasonable sound level when it is running hot.
3600 has some little room to play with if you feel inclined, could always just hit PBO level 1 and be good, but the 3600X is already just a factory OC'd 3600, there's almost no room for manual improvement, just a bunch of ways to jack up the temp for next to no gains. It's a Ryzen, not a 3rd Gen Intel, the days of a 1GHz OC are long gone.
I don't like that software OCS because I learned a lesson with Aod, in fact the only thing I use for is monitoring. I just put a 3600 on my son's MSI B450-GAMING-PRO-CARBON-AC last night and set the ram and Pbo and going to leave it there. Have a great weekend guys!!!
