Hey there! Your dad's situation sounds tricky. The software he needs requires Windows 8.1 or newer, and you're considering installing Windows 10 on an older 12-year-old PC. Some friends mentioned their DDR2 systems didn't work with Windows 10, which adds concern. While the hardware (Q9300 CPU and 8GB DDR2 RAM) is decent for multimedia use, DDR2 might still pose compatibility issues. You might want to double-check before proceeding to avoid extra hassle. Let me know if you need more advice!
DDR2 shouldn't create any issues. However, supporting other hardware drivers might become challenging. You may face difficulties installing a driver for the network card, among others. With additional HDDs or SSDs, you can try a Windows 10 setup before removing the previous operating system.
What gpu is in there? The integrated graphics in the pc do not have driver support which can mess up a lot of applications that need gpu acceleration. A q9300 and 8gb of ddr2 are decent but a ssd is welcome if it doesn't already have it. Also what programs will need to be used as that is the make or break thing.
The complete specifications of the system are available in Windows 10, which supports most of the core 2 models I mentioned earlier.
Windows 10 functions well on older systems provided drivers are available. Reducing unnecessary programs can significantly improve performance. Uninstalling unused software helps too. Deinstalling Windows can bring noticeable improvements. Upgrading to an SSD offers the greatest benefits with quick results. I’m using Windows 10 on a Core2Quad and it performs adequately.
Windows 10 should function perfectly, and drivers should work without trouble. You’ll definitely benefit from using an SSD—even a modest 120GB will improve performance. DDR2 compatibility is fine with this version. I’ve tested it on significantly older hardware before.
You can run multiple versions of Windows side by side. Avoid using Windows 10 on an HDD—it's extremely slow these days. Just move the Windows 7 setup to a newer drive.
