RTX 3070 facing issues maintaining 60fps in 1080p resolution.
ok im really confused about this whole bottleneck stuff, someone please explain it to me. I have a Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3070 and 16GB 3200mhz RAM but im struggling to get a stable 60fps in some games like need for speed unbound, when things get busy the fps would drop down to the low 40s. On average i get around 80-100fps in that game. what i don't understand is why is my build struggling so much at 1080p, with a card like a 3070 shouldn't it be no problem to get a stable 60fps at 1080p? Some people told me that its my monitor thats the bottle neck and some are saying that its the cpu. But why is the performance worse at lower resolutions? and should i get a 5800X3D and use the same 1080p 60hz monitor or get a 1080p 144hz monitor and stick with the 3600? Thanks. Edit: In Need for Speed Unbound my GPU usage never goes above 60% and CPU usage is around 40-50% both cpu and gpu have temps under 70C
??? What's going on? Even with a 60hz monitor, you usually won't see frame rate drops unless something is wrong. This doesn't solve the problem you're describing. It relies on your graphics settings. Just because you have a 3070 doesn't mean you can play every game nonstop at maximum settings forever. Even for "1080p", this game was released last month—two years after the 3070 was launched. It makes sense it would be tougher, though some issues might come from optimization.
Monitor in real time to observe CPU and GPU activity during usage. The GeForce Experience overlay offers this capability, along with other tools. Essentially, if the GPU reaches 100% while CPU usage drops, you're being limited by the GPU. Conversely, if CPU is high and GPU is low, CPU is the bottleneck. I don't have the exact game details, but my intuition suggests the CPU might be under pressure right now. Give these methods a try to understand what's happening before we address the issue effectively.
You can't simply claim a game is "CPU limited" without proper testing, especially when it's not a typical issue. EA often handles such problems and rarely resolves them. I owned a 3600 with a 3070 for nearly two years without any problems. Still, I don’t consider buggy titles a good choice.
In that specific game, your GPU stays under 60% while the CPU remains at about 40-50%.
It also puzzled me a lot, but I added that my GPU stays below 60% and CPU around 40-50%, with both temperatures under 70°C.
Based mainly on GPU consumption it seems CPU isn't the main bottleneck, so I still favor the processor side. With SMT at half capacity you're fully utilizing the available cores with minimal extra headroom from multithreading. It could indicate the game values single-thread performance more than multi-threaded speed. I observe the title suggests a 3600 MHz CPU but doesn't specify its intended performance, possibly aiming for around 30 frames per second. @Mark Kaine has a valid observation. If a title is poorly designed, simply adding more hardware won't guarantee improvement. Are there other titles similarly affected or just this one?
Up to now, the only titles I've seen that fall into the low 40s are Marvel's Spider-Man and this game.
