Checked the latest updates for Windows 11 to ensure consistency.
Tested the download page: it doesn't show Dx8, but could be useful.

If you wish to keep exploring the VMware route: it's been a while since I worked with VMs for Windows 98/XP, yet I remember that VMware allows GPU PCI passthrough.
Check the info link provided.
Uncertain if Horizon supports this, but they recently released VMware Workstation Pro free for personal use.

Older versions of VirtualBox mimic a GeForce 6800 when running Windows XP guests with 3D acceleration enabled via guest additions. I believe version 5.2.x marked the limit, though version 6.0.x might have worked too.

I have some positive updates. The performance is solid overall, with only minor issues in the menu except for a few exceptions. Even the menu now runs more smoothly.

I made three adjustments:
- Updated game files in your Program Files (x86) - Infogrames Interactive - Saddle Club - Willowbrook - Extra - to the config app, setting resolution to 1280x1024 and using 32-bit.
- Navigated to the ----Video--- folder, found two videos, and a pop-up appeared stating the video couldn't play due to a missing MPEG codec. I downloaded the required codec from Microsoft support and installed it.
- Added the file DirectInputFpsFix_v1_0---dinput8.dll to the game folder, which resolves input-related FPS issues in FEAR, Condemned: Criminal Origins, and other titles.

Now the cut scene video is much smoother. I can still use the Esc key as before, and saving games works consistently. The visuals are sharper, textures and grass look excellent, and character interactions function properly.

However, the menu still has problems with the mouse being unresponsive or laggy. I recommend timing your actions carefully to complete tasks without issues. Overall, the game is now functioning well.

Great progress has been made
@stonecarver
I found out that a keyboard can be used to choose menus or files. Except for graphics settings which require a mouse, and some diary menus, it seems better to use the keyboard arrow keys. It’s simpler than using a moving mouse.
Saving and loading works fine by pressing Enter twice.
Edit – Videos always played correctly for me, and Windows didn’t provide any codecs. I have VLC installed, the latest version. Trying to play with Windows Media Player results in a blank screen and just audio.
There’s no way to add codecs. It might be part of an Intel program or something else, or maybe having VLC installed makes a difference, but the videos still worked well.
I added dinput8.dll but didn’t notice any change. Everything functions the same as before. It looks good.
The only thing I noticed is that the sky is visible through the roof of the house where you begin the game.
Other than that, no flickering or clear problems.

I thought it wouldn't hurt to include that. I was trying everything, even the kitchen sink, in hopes of finding an inf file with custom values. I passed over a game file named ---trace---, but it seems it contains what I was seeking. Now I'm planning to copy that ---trace--- file and store it safely, then test if any manual adjustments can improve the game.

On windows 10 and 11, press start and enter control panel. In the upper right corner, select view by size to reveal small icons, then choose programs and features. On the left side of program and features, click Turn windows features on or off. The initial checkbox should be set to install .NET Framework 3.5 (which includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)

I went down that route to allow early .nets but ran into a problem and didn't install. It was a few years ago, so I'll try again. Thanks for the update.

Same installation process begins and then stops.
Windows fails to finish setup. Please restart your computer and attempt again. Error code: 0x800F0950
I’m still having trouble getting the .nets to install.
