I'm based in the Vancouver BC area and just joined Lightspeed Cable (lightspeed.ca). It's another Shaw TPIA that handles Cipherkey resellers. Once my connection was set up, I received an email asking me to provide my public IP address. That felt unusual since I don't have a fixed IP plan and I assumed the ISP could find it if needed. Even if I send it, why would they require it?

It looks suspicious, isn't it? Did you really provide your email for this? Usually they don’t ask for personal info unless it’s a specific service.

Do not forward the message by email. Contact them directly if you believe it's a legitimate request; they should recognize your public IP address.

He explained what was happening. Your public IP address is given to you by the ISP initially. Only you and the ISP should be aware of it.

Your IP address is provided by your internet service provider. Avoid sending it through email.

They’re requesting your public IP address. What are you doing?

If lightspeed.ca exists as a genuine business, anyone urging you to share your public IP must be a fraud.

Thank you for your reply. I'll reach out soon—it sounds like this isn't something I've encountered before from any ISP. The attached section from the welcome email requests that information.

Theres no reason for them to ask that from you. They can get your line identifier and then they can search your IP address in their system. This is pretty basic, since they'll receive letters from the big production companies for Piracy Cease and Desist, which has the date/time, name of the offending file, and the offending IP address, from which they have to forward the complaint to the customer. So they most definately can search this.
