Hello everyone, I'm working on upgrading or repairing a Dell Dimension XPS 4th Gen and need some advice. First, with the P4 Northwood motherboard, it seems only a specific GPU would work well despite the slow CPUs—could a 4090 be suitable? Second, the graphics slot is outdated and lacks an onboard port; would installing a PCIe x1 to x16 adapter be a viable solution? I understand it would run at reduced speed, but I want something capable enough to function. I also know this would make a GPU upgrade unnecessary in the long term, though I’m planning to purchase another machine later. Lastly, the budget isn’t a concern, just the need for the top performance possible. I also realized I’d need a new power supply soon.

No, I am not recommending placing a 4090 GPU in such a setup. It would be more efficient to opt for a lighter instead.

I understand it may seem strange, but I have several other superior options available, and I was also thinking about purchasing a higher-gen 5 model.

If you purchase a 4090 and try to install it in this machine, I'll find you and carry out terrible actions...

It wasn't really something I would have done if I wanted to, but it's just a possibility.

No, that's not a "thought." That's an abomination.

I have significantly inferior machines compared to what this one offers, and I've also seen even worse ones.
I just need to do something with it since I recently bought it in a bulk of 8 computers.
Would using a GeForce GTX 710 be a better option?

Yes, so I do too.
The issue wasn't the (semi broken) system itself, but combining it with a 4090.

Is this a joke or something more serious? Besides doubting if a 4090 would fit in an old motherboard, the CPU might not be able to transmit enough data to a powerful GPU to reach its full capacity. I don’t understand how the mouse is connected to this.
