Hello everyone, I hope your Christmas was great. Recently, I've been working on upgrading my older Dell Precision T3500 with some newer components. I've considered a new GPU, power supply unit, and a more recent CPU. My current CPU is an Intel Xeon W3530. I'm leaning towards either the Intel Xeon X5675 or the Xeon X5690. Could you share your thoughts and advice before I decide? I have 24 GB of RAM and plan to get an RX 580 for gaming at 1080p resolution. What are your opinions?

RX580 would face significant performance limits. Would you like an alternative MOBO and CPU setup? There are many good options available. A 2200G with ASRock B450M Pro 4 is a solid budget pick. However, the X5690 model stands out for gaming thanks to its higher boost clock.

From what I've noticed in some games, the Rx 580 performs well with both chips, though I'll keep that in mind. Regarding the CPU + motherboard setup, if you're planning to purchase new, I don't want to waste money on a new Ryzen CPU and a matching motherboard. As for a LGA 1366 motherboard, it's quite challenging to find one in Sweden since there aren't many available.

I’d prefer the Xeon X5690. If unavailable, go with X5680. X5675 works too. Expect under 10% bottleneck—nothing to worry about. Best of luck with the upgrade!

For the T3500, I recommend using a W3680. These chips offer an unlocked multiplier and turbo power limits comparable to an Intel Extreme CPU yet at a lower cost. They perform optimally when fully loaded between 4000 MHz and 4133 MHz. While newer options are available, they provide excellent value when paired with a modern GPU. The standard Dell heatsink can be upgraded easily by attaching a $5 case fan. It’s a great way to enjoy performance without overspending. Edit – current listings show prices around $44 on EBay.

I'm also curious about other improvements you've made, since I've been thinking about different options. On AliExpress, the X5690 seems to cost nearly double the X5675 and offers up to 130W versus 95W. Would it still be a good choice for maximum performance in your system? Thanks for your feedback!

In short, the W series can be pushed beyond limits while the X series cannot. I believed the Dell Precision T3500 wouldn’t exceed its speed limits.

The Dell BIOS doesn't allow overclocking, but ThrottleStop or Intel XTU might work if you locate a version that supports it. It seems the overclocking option was removed in newer XTU releases. The images shown are from my T3500.

I understand your question about Xeon W chips and overclocking. It's not all of them, but some are compatible. You can definitely try to overclock certain Xeon X chips as well. This could let you use a more affordable quad-core processor and boost performance if it works for that model.
