Unless the installation disk matched your laptop’s specific details (brand, series, model), it’s odd they gave you media from another OEM. If the sticker shows “Dell,” that means it’s already linked to a Dell device, which might be why your activation keeps dropping.
Failed on an MSI, succeeded with an HP instead :'I’m not sure, I’ll probably check in with him today and get him Win 8.1 from the disc partition...
He purchased an email from a recognized Finnish online shop that included an activation key and a download link. The site itself doesn’t mention any special focus on Dell products; it simply states it’s an authentic, one-time OEM key for Windows 7 Home Premium. A user in the comments shared their experience: the activation key failed during installation, but they bypassed it using the control panel. Note: This information was discovered while typing.
Unless that price point is a shipping discount, it seems like a lot of exaggeration. I’d even doubt the legitimacy of those licenses since genuine OEM licenses shouldn’t have any branding on official Windows installations.
OEM licenses seem to be used only a single time, according to my understanding. It might be that the same license is being reused repeatedly, which could explain why people need to contact Microsoft for activation. That sounds strange. I’m curious to see what Microsoft has stated about this issue.
For older Windows versions, there are manufacturer-specific installers. Microsoft provides them with tools to tailor and deploy in bulk, activate, and distribute. A key sent via email usually comes with a download link, but it can be unreliable unless it was purchased directly from Microsoft's website. OEM isn't intended for this method of sale.
This situation really made me reconsider getting an OEM Windows version from kinguin.net. I'm holding off on the purchase until my first self-built PC arrives next week, though I'm not sure. I don't want any trouble like this happening again.
