Generally, upgrading provided a standard victory 10 and a tie linked to your Microsoft account. Reinstalling Windows 10 would require signing in with that account, and the activation key would be reused.

Even after replacing the HDD, you should still be able to use your 8.1 keyboard with a Windows 10 ISO on USB. The upgrade process might take a few months, but it’s likely to happen within 1 to 2 years.

I believe after a year you'll need to use USB instead of upgrading from 8.1, though I'm not entirely certain.
