My concern is straightforward. I bought Windows 8.1 retail, installed it, and then upgraded to Windows 10. Now I’m unsure if I’ll have it for a long time. I plan to replace my HDD in about a year, when the free upgrade for Windows 10 ends. Will I still be able to use Windows 10? What if my HDD fails in that year? Or should I just run a Windows 10 ISO on a USB and activate it later using my Windows 8.1 key after the upgrade expires? Any advice would be appreciated.

The initial Google results consistently point to Microsoft's confirmation about cleaning up after upgrading to Windows 10. The other links discuss related topics such as product key retrieval and installation issues post-upgrade.

You might be able to swap the HDD, but changing the motherboard could lead you to contact Microsoft and request a key.

It seems the free upgrade window for Windows 10 will likely end in about a year.

Sure, after one year you’ll need to reinstall Windows 10. Check your device’s specifications and follow the official installation guide to ensure compatibility and proper setup.

Get it from Microsoft via USB, set it up, and your Microsoft account will store the 10-key password for you.

You retained your 10 keys, they’re stored in your Microsoft account.
