what we observe here indicates a poor connection between the pc and the router. this should be reduced to one. why is your speed only 100 Mbps??? your router supports a motherboard with a 1x Gb LAN (Realtek RTL8111H), but you used a different cable on another pc? even when the wifi was off, flat cables tend to fail quickly.

I reside in an area where the top speed caps at 100 Mbps. The sole providers offering gigabit connectivity are usually big companies or government entities. I bought a router and repeater to boost coverage, added a 5 GHz band, and opted for a budget mesh solution. My apartment is crowded with neighbors, and if you examine the Wi-Fi analyzer chart, it resembles a high-stakes competition. Luckily, no one utilizes the 5 or 6 GHz channels, eliminating interference completely. I recognize that for extending the network, the best approach would be purchasing an access point and running CAT6e cabling from the router to it, but no one allows drilling through walls. I’ve used this cable since 2010 and it continues to function smoothly. I tested speeds on a Toshiba NB520-10U netbook both wired and wireless; download/upload rates stayed between 33–35 Mbps, despite the device’s full 100 Mbps capability. Probably one of the quirks of Xubuntu. Even when positioned directly in front of the router with a laptop nearby, the wireless signal remains at about 70%. The PC connection still works even if a cable connects to another device. The real boost occurs only when the cable is plugged into the laptop.

You might have misinterpreted something, this speed is the highest you could achieve. Both of your connected devices could hit that limit. COULD. Cat7 supports speeds up to 100 times faster than your 100 Mbps—meaning it’s around 10,000 Mbps. That’s why I suspected there might be an issue. Where did you obtain those drivers? Well, the network driver is usually from your motherboard manufacturer; often these are very outdated, and newer versions are available from the LAN chip manufacturer.

It’s also possible to get drivers for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth cards, LAN ports, and audio devices from chip makers, but there’s an optimization done by motherboard manufacturers to ensure drivers run more smoothly with their specific models. Of course, sometimes manufacturers release faulty drivers, worsening the situation. You’re left with only two options: switch to a stable version or wait for a new update. Recently, when my PC was idle, I experienced several BSODs with corrupted system32 files, confirming the issue likely affects the whole system, not just drivers or the router. Unfortunately, because I’m occupied with work right now, I don’t have time to back up and reinstall everything yet. I’m hoping it can be resolved by Sunday so I can share an update.

Consider testing your HDD or SSD using a smart tool. If these are the issues, prolonged boot times and other obvious problems suggest upgrading to a new motherboard after confirming your drives function properly.

100Mbit only employs 2 pairs in a 4-pair cable. If one or two pairs fail, the remaining two may also have problems, leading to connectivity loss. Ensure it functions with another device. Clean your network port, verify the contacts are straight, and consider testing a PCIe or USB NIC if needed.

HWinfo reports no issues with NVMe SSDs. Benchmarks and speed checks via CrystalDiskInfo show everything normal. Currently, I’m unable to modify the motherboard, so I’m using the MSI B450I temporarily.

Have you explored a different cable? It seems your setup is facing additional issues beyond just the router, as it’s struggling to maintain the expected 1000mbps speed.

I reinstalled Windows yesterday. The system operates almost stably (Radeon drivers occasionally trigger BSOD), though the Ethernet port continues to behave oddly. It appears there have been some updates. Every time I run a speed test using a cable, the download speeds range from 0.20 to 1 Mbps and upload speeds from 60 to 90 Mbps. It seems the download issue persists while upload remains normal. Also, switching between cables—especially those bundled with routers—makes the system recognize the connection much quicker. The reported speeds display as 1 Gbps in both adapter settings and LAN port LEDs. After attempting a hard reset of the router and BIOS following the Windows install, no significant improvement was observed. As a final resort, I plan to explore options in the advanced PCIe GBE controller settings and, if necessary, investigate MSI’s warranty coverage. If that’s not possible, I’ll consider replacing the chipset with a Realtek 8111H. The last step could involve testing another router just to confirm the current unit is functioning properly. Could a faulty BIOS or router firmware eventually cause network problems years after a flash or update?
