I faced a very similar problem. I have two WD SN550 drives on my Asus B550-i. The first one I installed is on the back of the motherboard with the OS in the Gen 3 slot, which functions properly. The second one I added about a week later is also a SN550 500GB used for game storage; it should work fine, but sometimes it disappears unexpectedly—no entries in disk utility or BIOS. If I power off the computer and cut power to the drive for around 30 seconds, then reboot it again, the drive appears once more, and I have to reseat it. @Zadkiel Thanks for the tip—I just downloaded the app and updated both drives, hoping this fixes the issue =)
I just woke up from sleep and noticed the M.2 slot in the Gen 4 port is missing. I had to shut off the power supply and restart the system for it to reappear. It might be related to BIOS settings or compatibility issues between Gen 3 and Gen 4 NVMe drives. The chances vary—could be the motherboard itself is faulty, perhaps the slot is damaged (the board is only two weeks old), or it can't support two M.2 drives using a PCIe 1660 Super card.
It's understandable to feel this way. Your issue seems unrelated to ours since we dealt with a 1TB drive and BIOS detection problems, whereas your problem involves a different model and sleep mode concerns.
It looks like another problem, but shutting down the drive should fix it. It's cool how similar issues pop up with M.2 drives on different boards. Thanks again @Zadkiel
This situation has come up again with my MSI Tomahawk B550. Now it works when I connect the M.2 SSD in the second slot, but after the system powers down it stops responding. Even after a full night of sleep, only basic programs launched and the D drive icons disappeared. After reinserting it and restarting, the computer became very slow, lagging heavily. I tried moving files, checking folders, and even opened Disk Manager, but deeper folder levels wouldn’t show anything. It seems Windows (version 11) might be hiding something in its cache. Once I rebooted, the drive disappeared again, so I’m planning to adjust BIOS settings next. This issue keeps popping up despite recent BIOS updates in 2023.
I saw the Asus B550 board. I use a Strix -F, Strix -XE, and a Dark Hero. My drives are WD black and everything works fine. I accidentally hit my XE with a screwdriver, now it's hanging on code 4D... now I'm feeling better. I don't let my computer sleep—running 24/7 or shutting it down for maintenance.
Tomorrow I’ll share my complete model list, but my main concern is the M.2 slot 2. I’ve seen many discussions about it, which helped me discover this issue. MSI has had serious problems with this board.
