Probability of a defective CPU?
No, an outdated BIOS wouldn't even boot since it wouldn't recognize the CPU. I've witnessed this numerous times.
Bring the motherboard to a repair shop and request them to update the BIOS for you. It will incur a fee, but it's one of the few solutions available, aside from purchasing a compatible CPU.

Bring the motherboard to a computer repair shop and request a BIOS flash. It will incur a cost, but it's likely the only solution unless you purchase a compatible CPU.
Doesn't Asus offer a method to update the BIOS without a CPU installed?

Everything is fine; I was considering this: http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/usb_bios_flashback_guide/. It’s about time they introduced an onboard chip to manage that. Great concept.
