Imagine a setup featuring a machine with 3995wx and 2 terabytes of RAM, paired with 3990x using 256 gigabytes on a Threadripper Pro installed in an ASUS WRX80 motherboard, while the Threadripper runs on a Zenith II Extreme Alpha.

Would it help to use 2TB over 256GB?

12k editing demands significantly more processing power than 4k, making it realistic. Going overkill can actually be beneficial in the long term, though it depends on your needs. I’d suggest a 3995WX with at least 2TB RAM if you can afford a capable graphics card. Video editing isn’t extremely demanding on the GPU, but it doesn’t mean skimping on quality—especially since you’ll be handling 12k resolution files. You don’t need to overcommit with a weak GPU either.

It depends on how much RAM you have. If you exceed 256GB, it will affect performance. It's best to monitor RAM usage while editing to understand your needs. I'm not sure about 12K footage, but generally, people can handle 8K with 32-64GB. CPU cores help most during rendering, the more they are, the better.

I understand that. However, 2TB might be excessive for 3D work, especially if you're just editing videos—likely not enough storage even for basic tasks. This discussion was about avoiding After Effects. Also, Premiere Pro can run smoothly on just the CPU.

I don’t have any experience with Premiere. I’m relying on my existing knowledge, which suggests it could handle 12K files on a 256GB RAM system. There’s also another factor to consider.

Based on my background, working with 4K files on a 16GB system and an 1050ti is manageable without issues. A 2TB drive would definitely help later. Premiere works well on the CPU using software rendering, and it would run significantly better with a GPU.
